Elly Awards
Each year, the Sacramento Area Region Theater Alliance (SARTA) hosts the Elly Awards for excellence in theater performance. The Ellys are named after Eleanor McClatchy, the late president of McClatchy newspapers which publishes the Sacramento Bee. McClatchy, who died in 1980, was dedicated to supporting the performing arts in the Sacramento region and was a committed theatre patron.
There are 282 nominations in the categories of: drama, comedy, musicals, education, young people's theater, and originals. Community, college, and high school theaters are eligible for the awards. Volunteer judges, who are dedicated theater lovers, use a standardized point scale to evaluate an array of production elements delineated on the judging form. Judges commit to see every show in their assigned category typically attending up to 50 shows in a year.
* denotes Elly recipient.
